There are several codes that answer this question. It depends on what type of recording, if any, guidance, probe placement, image acquisition, report, etc.
Below are the transesophageal echocardiogram as listed in CPT, included are the guidance codes as well as the , image acquisition interpretation and report codes:
Code | Status | Global | Description |
---|---|---|---|
93312 | A | XXX | Echocardiography, transesophageal, real-time with image documentation (2D) (with or without M-mode recording); including probe placement, image acquisition, interpretation and report Medicine > Cardiovascular > Echocardiography |
93313 | A | XXX | Echocardiography, transesophageal, real-time with image documentation (2D) (with or without M-mode recording); placement of transesophageal probe only Medicine > Cardiovascular > Echocardiography |
93314 | A | XXX | Echocardiography, transesophageal, real-time with image documentation (2D) (with or without M-mode recording); image acquisition, interpretation and report only Medicine > Cardiovascular > Echocardiography |
93315 | C | XXX | Transesophageal echocardiography for congenital cardiac anomalies; including probe placement, image acquisition, interpretation and report Medicine > Cardiovascular > Echocardiography |
93316 | A | XXX | Transesophageal echocardiography for congenital cardiac anomalies; placement of transesophageal probe only Medicine > Cardiovascular > Echocardiography |
93317 | C | XXX | Transesophageal echocardiography for congenital cardiac anomalies; image acquisition, interpretation and report only Medicine > Cardiovascular > Echocardiography |
93318 | C | XXX | Echocardiography, transesophageal (TEE) for monitoring purposes, including probe placement, real time 2-dimensional image acquisition and interpretation leading to ongoing (continuous) assessment of (dynamically changing) cardiac pumping function and to therapeutic measures on an immediate time basis Medicine > Cardiovascular > Echocardiography |
93355 | A | XXX | Echocardiography, transesophageal (TEE) for guidance of a transcatheter intracardiac or great vessel(s) structural intervention(s) (eg,TAVR, transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement, mitral valve repair, paravalvular regurgitation repair, left atrial appendage occlusion/closure, ventricular septal defect closure) (peri-and intra-procedural), real-time image acquisition and documentation, guidance with quantitative measurements, probe manipulation, interpretation, and report, including diagnostic transesophageal echocardiography and, when performed, administration of ultrasound contrast, Doppler, color flow, and 3D Medicine > Cardiovascular > Echocardiography |

Transesophageal Echocardiography (93315-93317)
A transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) differs from a transthoracic echo in that the echo probe is mounted on an endoscope that is placed into the esophagus to provide better images of the heart. TEE may be performed when the results from the standard transthoracic echo test are not sufficient to answer the clinical question, or when the physician needs to take a closer look at the heart. Two-dimensional images of internal structures of the heart (ie, cardiac chambers, valves, and great vessels) are visualized and recorded on videotape or stored in digital format. The following transesophageal echocardiography codes should be reported for congenital cardiac anomalies:
93315 Transesophageal echocardiography for congenital cardiac anomalies; including probe placement, image acquisition, interpretation and report
93316 placement of transesophageal
probe only
93317 image acquisition, interpretation and report only
Coding Tip
Modifier 26, Professional Component, is appended to the echocardiography code when the interpretation is performed separately.
Clinical Example
A 10-year-old female diagnosed with a heart murmur and fatigue has a TEE performed using usual imaging as well as color flow, pulse wave, and continuous wave Doppler. Pulmonary valve stenosis is diagnosed and the Doppler study provides details about the severity of the stenosis gradient.
How to Code
For this example, report the codes below. Note that the pulsed wave Doppler and color flow Doppler mapping services are described with add-on codes, which may be reported in conjunction with the TEE code.
93315 Transesophageal echocardiography for congenital cardiac anomalies; including probe placement, image acquisition, interpretation and report
93320 Doppler echocardiography, pulsed wave and/or continuous wave with spectral display (List separately in addition to codes for echocardiographic imaging); complete
93325 Doppler echocardiography color flow velocity mapping (List separately in addition to codes for echocardiography)
